Pandemic Does Not Lower The Interest of Indonesian Citizens to Register Their Trademarks

Read Time: 2 minutes

Registering a brand in Indonesia is now quite easy, our government has accommodated its citizens to register their trademark more easily, so that their economic rights are not violated. In 2016, after Law no. 20 of 2016 regarding Marks and Geographical Indications was revised and ratified, then promulgated on November 25, 2016, there were 48,739 trademark registrants with Indonesian citizenship on the DJKI website.

This law revision has proven effective in increasing public interest, because in 2015, there were only 35,636 registrants, or an increase of 37%.

Furthermore, the increase continues to occur every year, with an average increase of 17%. 2019 was the year with the highest increase, reaching 22% with the number of registrants reaching 68,915.

When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit Indonesia in early 2020, the economy also faltered. Many businesses have collapsed and employees have been laid off. As a result, new businesses from the MSME category have emerged, which are deemed necessary to have their trademark registered.

On the other hand, China, which in 2019 saw applications for trademark registration, jumped by 50%, from 2,810 to 4,193, in 2020 it decreased by 3,828 applications. But with this number, China can still maintain its position as the country with the highest number of applications in Indonesia since 2018.

Other countries that also dominate applications for trademark registration at the DJKI throughout 2020 are the United States (2.9%), Japan (1.9%), and Singapore (1.6%).

Well, it turns out that this pandemic has not dampened the public’s desire to keep trying and registering their brands. What do Partners think?
