Indonesia Leads In IP Filings: What It Means

Read Time: 2 minutes

In a significant leap forward, Indonesia has recorded the highest number of patent applications in the world during the first quarter of 2025. According to data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Indonesia filed 715 patent applications—outpacing Japan (497), China (467), the United States (375), and South Korea (178).

But that’s not all, Indonesia also topped global rankings in industrial design protection, submitting 1,186 filings, far surpassing Japan (254), China (88), the U.S. (79), and South Korea (48). This marks a major milestone for the country’s innovation ecosystem.

Driving Factors: Digital Transformation in IP Services

Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas, credited this achievement to ongoing initiatives by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), especially the rollout of the automatic approval system (POP). The innovation has drastically reduced the time required for trademark renewals, from several days to approximately ten minutes. This is part of a broader digital transformation of intellectual property in Indonesia, making IP services more efficient and accessible.

Empowering MSMEs Through Education and Access

Beyond service improvements, the government has placed a renewed focus on expanding educational outreach, especially for MSMEs in Indonesia. The DGIP has been urged to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting intellectual property rights for businesses, particularly in relation to trademarks, patents, and industrial designs.

This aligns with the increasing need for IP consultation in Indonesia, as more entrepreneurs seek to safeguard their brands and innovations.

Why It Matters

Historically, Indonesia faced challenges in its IP reputation, but recent developments show positive momentum. The sharp increase in filings highlights a rising awareness among individuals, institutions, and businesses about protecting their intellectual assets.

With more streamlined processes, digitized systems, and accessible information, the IP registration process in Indonesia has become more user-friendly. As the country moves toward becoming a hub for innovation and the creative economy, there’s never been a better time for startups, creators, and local businesses to recognize the value of intellectual property.
