Growth of Local Patents: Evidence of Indonesia’s Innovation Independence
The year 2025 marks an important milestone in the development of Indonesia’s innovation ecosystem and intellectual property protection framework. Data from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) shows that throughout 2025, a total of 15,193 patent applications were filed in Indonesia.
Of this number, 6,424 patent applications originated from domestic Indonesian innovators, while 8,769 applications were filed by foreign applicants. These figures demonstrate that the contribution of Indonesian innovators continues to grow and plays an increasingly significant role in building a knowledge-based economic foundation.
Universities as the Primary Engine of National Innovation
One of the most notable insights from Indonesia’s 2025 patent report is the dominance of universities as the main source of domestic innovation. A total of 3,965 patent applications, representing approximately 61% of all domestic patent filings, originated from research conducted by academics and researchers in higher education institutions.
This achievement confirms that universities are not only centres of education but also key drivers of national innovation. Through continuous research and development activities, higher education institutions have produced a wide range of technologies and inventions with the potential to generate meaningful impact for society and industry.
Focus on Strategic Fields
Patent applications originating from universities are predominantly concentrated in strategic sectors that play a crucial role in national development, including:
- Food Chemistry, supporting national food security;
- Pharmaceuticals, strengthening healthcare independence;
- Computer Technology, driving digital transformation across various sectors;
- Basic Chemical Materials, contributing to industrial development;
- Special Machines, enhancing capacity and efficiency in the manufacturing industry.
The dominance of these fields indicates that research in Indonesia is increasingly aligned with national strategic needs while simultaneously generating sustainable economic value.
From Research to Asset: The Importance of Patent Protection
Innovation does not end when research is completed. To ensure that research outcomes deliver maximum benefit and possess commercial value, adequate legal protection through the patent system is essential.
A patent grants exclusive rights to inventors to utilize their inventions and to prevent others from using, producing, or commercializing them without authorization. In other words, a patent serves as a safeguard to ensure that research developed with significant time, effort, and investment is not unlawfully used or exploited by others.
Beyond legal protection, patents represent the first step in transforming innovation into success. Patent rights can open opportunities for industry collaboration, technology licensing, investment, and commercialization, all of which contribute added value to the national economy.
Building National Independence Through Innovation
The increasing number of domestic patents is a positive indicator of Indonesia’s global competitiveness. The more innovations that are protected and developed by local inventors, the stronger the foundation of national technological independence becomes.
Local patents not only protect the creations of Indonesian innovators but also help reduce dependence on foreign technology. Ultimately, strengthening the innovation ecosystem and intellectual property protection will become a key driver in reinforcing the national economy through technology and solutions created in Indonesia, for Indonesia.
Therefore, any research output with potential novelty and industrial applicability should be promptly identified and protected through patent registration. From excellent research emerges valuable intellectual assets, and from protected intellectual assets grows the future of Indonesian innovation.
Protecting innovation through patents is an essential step to ensure that research and development outcomes receive optimal legal protection and retain sustainable economic value. In addition to patents, intellectual property protection also includes trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, trade secrets, and various other forms of intellectual property that may serve as valuable assets for individuals, academic institutions, business actors, and corporations.
