ASEAN IP Register: Optimizing Data Exchange

Read Time: 2 minutes

On August 20, 2023, in Semarang, the 55th ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting 2023 was held, which was attended by ASEAN members who collaborated with WIPO. This meeting became momentum for the ASEAN IP Register launch, coordinated by the Indonesian side through DGIP.

What is the ASEAN IP Register?

The ASEAN IP Register is a one-stop information portal that will provide the latest data on the intellectual property of the ten ASEAN members under WIPO. There will be complete access to intellectual property data in ASEAN for stakeholders who want to search for patents, trademarks, and designs seamlessly because a sophisticated information exchange system supports it.

Purpose of Launching the ASEAN IP Register Program

This program was launched to develop the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by implementing technology and innovation in intellectual property. WIPO, represented by its Directorate General, Daren Tang, also reaffirmed partnering with ASEAN to create a conducive intellectual property environment, enabling entrepreneurs, innovators, and creators to create, protect, and transform their intellectual property as intangible assets into a commercial opportunity within a thriving regional intellectual property ecosystem. The ASEAN Intellectual Property Registry is one of many WIPO technical projects that provide access to world-class Intellectual Property services for ASEAN business people and innovators, thereby designing new strategies and new ways of commercializing Intellectual Property in ASEAN as a region.

In his keynote speech, the Secretary General of ASEAN asked to remain committed to updating and maintaining data related to the IP Register to ensure its effectiveness. He also appreciated the performance of the country delegates in ASEAN and believed in supporting the existing workforce in realizing this cooperation.

Advantages of Launching the ASEAN IP List

According to WIPO statistics, in 2022, ASEAN will experience growth that reaches intellectual property standards. Between 2012 and 2022, even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, applications for patents and industrial designs jumped by 70% and 80%, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of trademark applications also grew by 110%.

As a result, the 2023 WIPO Global Innovation Index projects that the market value of leading ASEAN brands will exceed $250 billion, indicating the soaring value of ASEAN’s tangible assets. It is an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs, innovators, and creators who wish to commercialize their IP assets. This program will undoubtedly be one of many efforts to advance the economies of ASEAN member countries.
